Why I Refuse to Purchase the New Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit Palette | Holiday 2015

Let me just say, I was one of those who was SO EXCITED to see the creation of this palette. I own both the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette and the Ambient Lighting Blush Palette. Both were really great values and I reach for them constantly. The excitement of the release this morning clouded my judgement when I posted, but now that the adrenaline has faded, I can now clearly see what I should have noticed all along…this is the biggest waste of money for holiday 2015.

First, the color selection. If you already own the other palettes, then you’ll notice some repeats. One of the Ambient Lighting Powders (Dim Light) was in the Ambient Lighting Palette and BOTH Ambient Lighting Blushes (Mood Exposure and Luminous Flush) were in the Ambient Lighting Blush Palette. It’s really not worthwhile to spend $80 when there are three repeated shades.

If you don’t own the other palettes, let me break down the “value” of this palette.

This palette includes:

  • Ambient Strobe Lighting Powder in Iridescent Strobe Light (0.049 oz)
  • Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light (0.049 oz)
  • Ambient Lighting Powder in Diffused Light (0.049 oz)
  • Ambient Lighting Blush in Luminous Flush (0.049 oz)
  • Ambient Lighting Blush in Mood Exposure (0.049 oz)
  • Ambient Lighting Bronzer in Luminous Bronze Light (0.049 oz)

For the sake of easier calculations lets round each up to 0.05 oz

The cost of the full size items are as follows:

  • Ambient Lighting Blushes are $35 each for 0.15 oz (~$11.67 per 0.05 oz)
  • Ambient Lighting Powders are $45 each for 0.35 oz (~$6.43 per 0.05 oz)
  • Ambient Bronzers are $50 each for 0.39 oz (~$6.25 per 0.05 oz) (rounded 0.39 oz to 0.40 oz to make it easier)

Which means the value of the palette is:

Ambient Lighting Blushes (2 x $11.67) + Ambient Lighting Powders (3 x $6.43) + Ambient Bronzer ($6.25) = $48.88

Even rounded up to $50 value, it’s still a far cry from the $80 cost.

I truly thought this palette was a great value, thinking the pan sizes would be comparable to the previous palettes (~0.11 oz each), but they decided to chop that in half and increase the price. Shame on you Hourglass!

You’re much better off buying the single items, or perhaps getting the Ambient Lighting Palette and a few single blushes.

What are your thoughts on this? Let me know!

I personally don’t own any hourglass products and was therefore very excited to see this palette. I thought/think it is a great way to try a bunch of products without having to purchase them individually, however now that I’ve read your “value” evaluation I see that it just isn’t even close to being fair pricing. I guess many of us, myself included obviously, blindly believe that because it’s a few products together and it’s a holiday palette that the price will be lower or at least fair.
Thank you so much btw because with all the excitement I wouldn’t have thought of doing it myself.
It still looks very pretty and temping but I’ll think it through a few times before spending $80 on something that’s literally not worth it.
I really appreciate the time you took to let us know, you’re the best 🙂

If you really want to try all six of the items then it’s definitely worthwhile to get this product. It’ll take you forever to hit pan because I use the blush palette constantly and I’ve barely made a dent. BUT, if you aren’t super thrilled about every color in this palette, you’re better off selecting full size items of the ones you really want. I don’t own the bronzer but I have both the Ambient Lighting Palette and the Ambient Lighting Blush Palette. The blushes are my fav. I’d pick one or two blush shades and get the full size instead. 🙂

This would have been my first hourglass purchase, mind changed. Thank you Alina for saving me $80+. That’s $80 I can invest in something else with. You’re awesome!

If you really want to try one of their products (bronzer, blush or lighting powder), I’d recommend getting a blush. Luminous Flush is my fav daytime blush and Mood Exposure is great for Fall. If you’re really interested in trying all six of the items in this palette then yes it would be cheaper to get this palette than buy all the single items. Personally, I’d say only the blushes are really super spectacular and you can go pick out the one that you REALLY like instead of getting six shades they chose.

Glad you spotted this. I never thought to check the pan sizes which seems pretty obvious when you think about it : ) Definitely will pass on this.

What I found really interesting was they removed the sizes of each pan from the Ambient Lighting Palette product description. I had to google back to blog posts to get the info. A bit sketchy in my opinion!

I agree with you and was intending to purchase as well then I realized the sizes and decided against it. I did order the new Smashbox palette from Sephora.

I don’t have any hourglass product and my sister just got one of the palettes. I was SO surprised to see how small they were! I was excited to get this holiday palette but now I think I might pass if they are smaller than the palletes with 3 shades.

I don’t own the bronzer but I do own both the Ambient Lighting Palette and the Ambient Lighting Blush Palette. I love both palettes and they we’re a much better value because each pan was 0.11 oz instead of this palette which is 0.049 oz. Unless you are absolutely set on all six items, I wouldn’t recommend getting this palette. Out of all the items I’d say their blushes are the best and Luminous Flush is one of my favorite day time blushes and Mood Exposure is great for fall.

Aww I know! Honestly, if you were really interested in theses items, you’re better off keeping this palette. Since I have both the Ambient Lighting Palette and the Ambient Lighting Blush Palette, I already own three of these shades so for the price of this palette I could really just about buy the full sizes of the other shades if I really wanted them. Just play with it a bit and see if you absolutely love it. If not, return it!

That’s disappointing. I’ve heard several other bloggers say they were unhappy as well. Thanks for not letting me waste money on this!
